The wind is howling, blowing the leaves and rain around me. I’m barely able to make out my hand in front of my face. Despite it all, I still trudge on. I can’t stop. It is my fault this is happening. And if I stop, even for a moment, they will all die.

“Kali!” A disembodied voice carries on the wind, but there is no one there. No one behind me. No one stupid enough to follow me into this storm. As soon as I convince myself that’s true, a silhouette appears deep in the fog.

I take off, running toward them with my arms and legs pumping hard, but it doesn’t seem to matter. The harder I run, the further they get.

“Kali!” the voice calls again. Is it male? Female? I can’t tell in this weather. The wind is too loud as the rain stings my eyes, making it even harder to see.

“Where are you?” I try to shout, but it is useless. My teeth chatter as the rain turns into snow.

“Time is running out,” a voice whispers in my ear. I turn toward it, but nothing is there.

The wind blasts around me, clearing the snow, revealing the bioluminescent flora and trees. I am left with the nagging feeling of familiarity, but the memory is just out of reach.

“Kali!” the voice calls, closer than before.

“I can’t see you! Where are you?” I try to call out again.

“I’m right here.” Strong, warm arms wrap around me. “I am so proud of you.” Their breath brushes against my neck, sending shivers throughout my body.

“For what?” I whisper, leaning into their strength. I’m suddenly exhausted from holding onto everything alone. It is becoming too much. I need help.

“Because you are just as sick and twisted as I thought you were. To let all those Folk die because you refused to choose.” Their voice turns into something that twists my stomach somberly.

Pain radiates through my ear and down my neck, pulling a scream from my throat as they bite into my ear with a vicious growl. Hot liquid pours down my front as they continue to clamp down harder.

I yank away from them and grab my ear to stop the bleeding.

I turn to fight them and come face-to-face with Egon.

“NO!” I shout as I sit up in bed. My heart races, and I can’t catch my breath.

I reach up and find that my ear is still there. There is no blood, no pain…and no Egon. But there is something that remains. That fucking choice.

Is this The Blessed’s way to get me to start taking this seriously? Was this a warning that my consciousness and self-doubt took over and twisted into a nightmare?

“Finally!” I jump and find Momma standing in the doorway of my bedroom. “I have been looking for you everywhere and calling your name. Why are you still in bed? You are going to be late, and then Edith will be mad at us all. You know how she gets when her schedule is thrown off.
